Sudbury textiles maker Vanners launches face mask range in response to coronavirus outbreak

A Sudbury textiles manufacturer says it is delighted to be supporting the community with its launch of fashionable face masks to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Vanners has created a range of non-medical silk face masks at its factory in Weavers Lane.

Since launching the protective gear, the business has received around 600 requests for the face coverings, while 100 have already been donated to Playford Court’s sheltered housing scheme in Inkerman Row.

“We are trying to help out where we can, and it’s been a nice thing to do,” said the firm’s managing director, Laura Gore. “The masks have been really well-received.”

After receiving a large number of requests to produce the protective gear, the business was keen to meet the high demand.

“Our shop customers had contacted us and asked if it was something we were going to do,” said Ms Gore, who added that she had been left disgusted to hear companies taking advantage of the crisis by hiking up prices for protective equipment.

“It’s terrible that people have been profiteering out of a bad situation, so we thought we could do something good by offering affordable face masks.”

The designs have been created out of patterned silk material, with a range of bold designs offering an alternative style to those currently on the market.

“They look quite smart and we have seen quite a lot of people wearing them,” said Ms Gore.

With the majority of staff furloughed, a third of the firm’s workforce have played a key role in creating the face masks, while helping to fulfil a large order of silk ties.

“A lot of them are local to the area, so it’s nice to feel involved,” added Ms Gore.
