Suffolk’s police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore, has formally announced the appointment of Steve Jupp as the next chief constable for the county.

An appointments panel chaired by Mr Passmore selected Mr Jupp to replace the retiring chief constable Gareth Wilson, following a rigorous process of interview, stakeholder panel and assessments, which took place earlier in the month.

This decision was subject to confirmation by the police and crime panel, which considered Mr Jupp’s nomination at a meeting at Endeavour House, Suffolk County Council’s headquarters, in Ipswich at the end of last week.

The panel members voted unanimously in support the appointment.

Following the confirmation hearing on Friday, Mr Jupp said: “I am very proud to have served as a police officer for over thirty three years in four very different forces, and it is a great honour to now be selected as Suffolk’s next chief constable.

“I love Suffolk and have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of my role as deputy to Gareth Wilson over the past three years.

“Suffolk is a great force. The commitment of our officers, staff and volunteers is second to none.

“I look forward to delivering the PCC’s police and crime plan for the people of Suffolk and building on the successes of the constabulary in my tenure as chief.”

The new chief constable is now expected to take up the role in April.

Mr Jupp, who previously served as the constabulary’s deputy chief constable, joined Suffolk Constabulary in 2015 from Nottinghamshire Police where, in his role as assistant chief constable, he was responsible for crime investigation and reduction.

He also served with West Midlands and the Metropolitan Police.

Mr Passmore added: “I am very pleased to announce Steve as the next chief constable for Suffolk.

“Steve impressed us with his forthright commitment to public service and delivering for the people of Suffolk.

“I have no doubt that he is the right person to lead the constabulary in its delivery of my police and crime plan.”
