Kingfisher Leisure Centre swimming pool in Sudbury remains closed after glass roof panel damaged
A leisure centre swimming pool which closed due to damage to a roof panel will remain shut for an additional two weeks.
The pool and health suite at Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury closed on Friday, August 23 after a glass panel directly above the pool broke - and while reopening was initially planned for tomorrow, the closure has been extended until Saturday, September 14.
The cause of the damage is still unclear, but the pool had to be drained and scaffolding has been installed due to the complexity of the repair.
More time is also needed for the supply of the specialist glass panel replacement.
A council spokesperson said: “We have been working as quickly as we can to repair the damage.
“We’re sorry for any disappointment the pool closure has caused, but people’s safety is our top priority.
“We thank everyone for their patience.”
Despite the pool closure, all other facilities at Kingfisher, including the gym, remain open, and the sauna was reopened on Monday.
The leisure centre is owned by Babergh District Council and operated by not-for-profit social enterprise Abbeycroft.
The council will take the opportunity to carry out additional maintenance work during the pool's closure.
Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft, said: “We’re sorry for the disruption this has caused at the end of the summer holidays, but we must ensure people’s safety.
“We have been contacting customers directly who have bookings with us and we thank everyone for their understanding.
“We look forward to welcoming people back to the pool when the work is complete.”
Swim Academy members affected by the closure will be notified by email and credited on their next direct debit payment for any missed lessons. Members can also use any of Abbeycroft’s other five swimming pools as part of their membership.
