Veteran Suffolk firefighter Stephen Simmons remembered as devoted family man following death at Sudbury home at age of 58
A long-serving Suffolk firefighter has been remembered as a devoted family man and a "compassionate and kind character", following his death last month.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue crew manager Stephen Simmons died at his home in Sudbury on Tuesday, August 24, following a short illness, at the age of 58.
The father-of-two and granddad to six was a 32-year-veteran of the county's fire service, based at stations in Sudbury and Bury St Edmunds, with peers he described as "his extended family".
Born in Colchester on July 2, 1963 and raised in Colne Engaine, he developed a strong affinity for the outdoors, spending much of his time amongst wildlife and nature, and he played for his local football and cricket teams.
After leaving school, he worked alongside his father at his business, Richard Simmons Catering, before joining Suffolk Fire and Rescue in 1989.
Stephen's family said he had been "incredibly proud" to be a part of the service for over three decades, and that he "felt honoured and privileged to work with so many wonderful colleagues" during this time.
He is survived by his mother Frances, children Emily and Jack, and grandchildren Maxwell, Finley, Sophia, Annabelle, Harry and Charlotte.
"Aside from being committed to his career, Stephen was a devoted and loving father and grandfather," a family statement reads.
"On his days off from work, Stephen could often be found making special memories with his grandchildren, whether it be collecting them from school, taking them fishing, going for walks along the meadows, or going on one of his famous bug hunts.
"Stephen was very thankful for all the help and support he was given during his final months, often overwhelmed by the love and care shown by his family, friends and colleagues.
"Stephen will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humour and his independent, strong, supportive, compassionate and kind character. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all that knew him."
His funeral will take place at St Gregory's Church in Sudbury on September 23. Tributes and donations to The Firefighters Charity can be made here.
