A volunteer who gives much of his time ensuring a former church remains the focus point of a community has been recognised for his work.

Roger Green was named South East Volunteer of the Year by the Marsh Christian Trust for his work with the Friends of St Peter’s in Sudbury.

The 69-year-old former teacher refused to accept the award on an individual basis, instead sharing it with his fellow volunteers who have helped transform the former church into one of the most popular venues in the area.

It has become so popular that it now takes many bookings up to three years in advance, with many dates in 2015 already secured.
