Bird back and wants big fight before the year is out

Billy Bird is hopeful of contesting an English or Southern Area title eliminator fight before the year is out, writes Alex Moss.

The former Sudbury Boxing Club member returned to training last week following a two month injury lay off and is determined to make up for lost time.

Bird’s last bout was back in May when he defeated Lithuania’s Evaldas Korsakas on points to win the International Classic Challenge belt.

A scheduled six round bout with Sam Wall in July was then cancelled at short notice, before an ankle injury kept him out of action up until last week, when he started training again for what he hopes will be a busy end to the year.

“I’ve been out for the last two months with an injury,” the 23-year-old said.

“I went over on my ankle in sparring and chipped a bone in my ankle.

“I was all geared up for a fight in July. I was going in off the back off a good win and I got a phone call to say the show was cancelled, which was a bit of a gutter.

“It’s one of those things you have to deal with. I then had the summer break and came back and got injured.”

Bird, who has won his last four fights, is now aiming to get back in the ring twice before the year is out.

“I’d love to have a big fight in December, like an English title eliminator or a Southern Area eliminator,” he said.

“It’s been a good year and I’d like to end it on a high with a big fight if all goes to plan.”
