Plenty of county success
St Joseph’s RC Primary School pupils have had plenty of success this year, reaching five county finals across five different sports during 2018.
The Sudbury-based school, which currently has only around 150 pupils under its guidance, qualified through to the county finals in girls’ basketball, girls’ cricket, girls’ rounders, boys’ basketball and mixed netball.
The teams, who are all in Years 5 and 6, won through two rounds of competition to secure themselves a place in the finals, coming through local and area rounds to then compete against Suffolk’s best.
Alistair Leighton-Scott, the PE subject leader at the school, said: “To get to five county finals is a massive achievement for the school.
“We’re a small school and, before, we’ve got to one or two finals, so to make so many is excellent.
“One of the highlights for me, though, is that we’ve given every child in Years 5 and 6 the opportunity to represent the school in a sport.
“The opportunity to play team sports really helps the pupils with their self esteem and confidence in all aspects of school life.”
Away from the county finals success, the school’s boys’ and girls’ football teams have both also enjoyed some success in clubs tournaments.
Leighton-Scott also revealed that the school is on target to achieve the Gold award for PE for the fourth year in a row, an award given to schools who give pupils access to two hours of PE and games a week.
