Sudbury ready to take top spot off Sawston & Babraham in important bank holiday weekend double header

It looks to be a make-or-break scenario but Darren Batch says Sudbury’s players are relishing a top-of-the-table clash followed by a derby this bank holiday weekend.

Due to a rained off match the Talbots trail Read Brothers Ltd East Anglian Premier League South Group leaders Sawston & Babraham by 18 points going into Saturday’s away clash between the pair. That is followed by hosting Bury St Edmunds’ chance for derby revenge on Monday (both 11am).

Losing either game, with just four fixtures then remaining, would pose a big threat to their chances of topping the group for a play-off final.

But following an emphatic nine-wicket victory against 2019 champions Frinton-on-Sea on Saturday , club captain Batch said they are raring to go.

“It was obviously a good win and to do so so emphatically is really pleasing as well,” he said.

“The bank holiday weekend is going to go a long way to deciding where the South Group goes.

“We play Sawston on Saturday, a team we have never faced before but a few of our players have come up against theirs in Minor Counties.

“Our approach will be no different and we are full of confidence with four wins from four games.

“We then have the derby on Monday and we have played Bury lots of times and got the better of them. We beat them earlier in the season and we are looking forward to it.”

Opening bowler James Poulson is away for Saturday’s game.
