Reece Topley is facing a stint on the sidelines after he sustained a broken hand on what was his Hampshire debut.

The England bowler, who played for Hadleigh as a junior. suffered the injury while batting against Warwickshire yesterday afternoon.

Despite the complaint, Topley continued to play on for his new county, contributing his first-class career-best of 15 runs before he was dismissed by international team-mate Chris Woakes.

“I was hit on the back of the hand and an X-ray this morning has revealed at least one fracture,” the 22-year-old told Sky Sports News.

“There’s one fracture there just below the knuckles and possibly another.

“I’m going to see a specialist later. It’s frustrating it came while batting, but that’s one of the risks when you play cricket.

“The worse-case scenario will see me have to have a wire put in my hand. The best case scenario will be to leave it and let it heal.”

Topley joined Hants at the end of last season, having previously been with Essex since the age of nine.
