Trio book place in national finals
In driving horizontal rain at Radwinter in Essex a trio of Sudbury Bowls Club players won through to the National Finals after victories in the North Essex County Finals (Federation Code).
In the Men’s Singles Sudbury’s Lee Rowland booked his place at the nationals in Skegness by beating Kevin Moore (Radwinter) 21-16.
The Ladies Pairs had the gallery spellbound as Sudbury’s Eileen Parker and Jane Watson had the toughest of battles with G Searle and D Freeman (Radwinter), with the opposition snatching victory in the last end 18-17.
Parker featured in four finals; in the Ladies 3 Wood Triples she was joined by Jane Watson and Rachel Bonsor, and going into the last end they were tied at 15 all. But pinpoint accurate bowling by Karro’s Tracie Christie took victory 16-15.
In the Ladies Secretaries Singles, Parker again had to suffer a one-shot defeat to Karro’s Margaret Thompson 21-20.
But Parker managed to book her place in the nationals though as she was triumphant in the Mixed Pairs with Graham Smith as they beat Graham and Clarrie Gooderham (Cornard) 21-11.
Graham Smith lost 21-16 to Malcolm Grimwood (Boxford) in the Men’s Secretaries Singles.
In the Men’s 2 Bowl Triples, Sudbury’s Terry Swift, Barry Wells and Aaron Phillips lost out 17-16 to G Wright, K Nichols, R Farrant (Stoke by Clare).
In the Men’s 3 Wood Triples, Brian Smith, Dave Parker and Rod Sharp were no match on the day to K Moore, J Howell, G Williter and lost 22-12 (full results on page 75).
