Mysterious shipping container mountain by Mendlesham Airfield discovered to contain excess PPE supplies
A 60-foot-high mountain of shipping containers that mysteriously appeared at Mendlesham Airfield, in Suffolk, has been found to contain huge stockpiles of excess PPE.
Last week, hundreds of the steel containers were spotted on the former airfield site off the A140 near Eye, just 26 miles from Britain's biggest freight port at Felixstowe.
The more than 1,000 containers where first believed to be empty, however it has now emerged that they contain excess PPE, put there by contractor Universe as part of a £124 million deal with the Department of Health.
According to reports in The Mirror, the DoH had spent millions this summer buying shipping containers to keep tens of billions of items of surplus PPE as a means of slashing costs.
Until Friday, authorities had remained tight-lipped about the contents of the 350-foot-long container mountain, leaving residents in nearby towns and villages scratching their heads.
On Thursday, a spokesperson for Mid Suffolk District Council had said that it was looking into the situation, but did not confirm where the containers had come from or when they would be removed.
Other piles of containers spotted near Melton railway station and at the Port of Ipswich have been reported to contain PPE, but this is yet to be confirmed.
