Growkids in Thetford receives £5,000 through Unlocking Thetford’s Potential Fund
A charity has received a £5,000 cheque following a public vote to support community groups in a town.
Growkids in Thetford has been awarded the funds as part of the town council’s Unlocking Thetford’s Potential Fund.
As part of the Vineyard Church network, Growkids operates a shop on the Abbey Estate providing free clothes for children up to 11 among other services.
Senior Pastor Victoria Bush said: “There were so many good projects available to vote for on the night and I’m still overwhelmed with gratitude so many people plumped for us.
“This initiative flags up how important it is for local charities to get support to ensure they are able to continue.”
A total of £25,000 was made available for groups to apply for following a budget underspend by Thetford Town Council.
Other groups to receive a share of the funding include Abbey Action Group (£2,500), Charles Burrell Museum (£5,000), Thetford Cricket Club (£5,000), Thetford Scouts (£3,500), Thetford Meet Up (£2,850) and Thetford Music Project (£1,150).
More than 200 people took part in the vote and the results decided how the full fund was allocated.
Cllr Terry Land said: “I’m particularly pleased Growkids received widespread support across the town.
“It’s humbling to have been part of a process that helped secure their immediate future.
“Victoria and her team are deeply embedded in the community they serve, setting a great example of how location is key to delivering support.
“Working directly within the community, though essential is costly, which makes this award even more significant.
“Although I wish there wasn’t a need for such charities, they are a shining example to all groups that location is vital for providing support. I will continue to support Growkids for as long as they require.”
