BURY FESTIVAL: Ute Lemper transports audiences to the 1930s

The stunning performance by Ute Lemper took her Apex audience back to the 1930s and the music of Marlene Dietrich, Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

Dressed in a slinky black gown the chanteuse was mesmerising as she narrated her relationship through the years with some of the great music which spanned 60 years.

Her beautifully modulated voice ranged through the moody tones of seminal love songs to amazing scat as she transformed a piece into something else.

Her ‘Last Tango in Berlin’ captivated the audience as she performed numbers including Falling in Love Again, Ruins of Berlin, Dylan’s Blowing in the Wind, the iconic Lili Marlene and Mack the Knife sung in German, French and English with Spanish for Paulo Coelho’s more modern piece.

In her journey through time she explained her relationship with each piece.

She was superbly accompanied by Vana Gierig on piano, Romain Lecuyer, bass, and Victor Hugo Villera on the bandoneon bringing the essential tango strains of Latin American sounds to some of the pieces.

Ute, 1998 winner of the Olivier award for her performance in the musical Chicago, made her performance a night to remember.
