Latte Art Throwdown comes to Norwich’s Wright’s café
At Butterworth & Son, we’ve been running the Bury Latte Art Throwdown since 2021, and it’s become a much-loved fixture in our local calendar. Norwich Latte Art Throwdown builds on that same idea: a friendly but competitive night that showcases skill, brings people together, and keeps the focus on community. We had such a brilliant time last year hosting the very first throwdown in Norwich City that we simply had to bring it back.
This year’s throwdown takes place on Thursday, October 9, starting at 6.30pm at Wrights Café in Norwich. The format is the same: a knockout-style competition, one barista against another, four rounds, judges choosing the winner cup by cup.
The competition is open to everyone, whether you’re a full-time barista or a coffee enthusiast at home. We only ask that competitors haven’t taken part in an SCA competition in the past three years, to keep things fair. Every entrant gets a goodie bag worth £10+, and there are some fantastic prizes from our industry friends at La Marzocco, Acaia and Brewed By Hand waiting for the winners.
Competitor tickets are on sale now, with 100 per cent of proceeds going to Emmaus, the homelessness charity. Spectators are welcome to come along for free – the more noise and encouragement, the better!
Last year, we welcomed baristas from Norwich, Ipswich, Bury and beyond. The trophy went home with Maddie Evans (@mads.pours) from London. I remember how nervous she was at the start, but by the end, she had the crowd right behind her. Afterwards she told us: “Travelling up to Norwich, from London, for a competition by myself was definitely a little intimidating, but everyone was so welcoming that I immediately felt at ease and like I was part of it all. Strangers cheering you on and vice versa – it’s a wonderful thing!”
That’s exactly what makes this event special. The competition is fun, of course, but it’s also about building connections, sharing skills and celebrating the love for coffee. It’s a simple idea: good coffee, good competition, good cause. Norwich, we’ll see you in October.
