Autumn season at The Apex, Bury St Edmunds, includes music of all genres – enjoy rock, pop, folk, jazz, world and classical artists




Scottish rockers Big Country will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their Steeltown album by performing songs from it and hits like Fields of Fire, In A Big Country and Look Away on September 20, writes Sandra Robinson., of the The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds.

Following the outstanding response to their recent ‘Live Dates’ tour, Wishbone Ash return on October 7 with songs from their follow-up album, Live Dates 2.

Former guitar-slinger for John Lee Hooker and Canned Heat, blues-rock’s resilient icon Walter Trout returns on October 22.

One of hard rock’s most exciting new acts, The Kris Barras Band (November 7) have enjoyed support slots on sold-out tours with Black Stone Cherry, The Darkness and Thunder.

See two of the finest rocking Rhythm ’n’ Blues bands in one night, when Nine Below Zero and Dr Feelgood bring their ‘Maximum RnB’ show to The Apex on December 5.

After an incredible 64 years of live shows, Elkie Brooks is embarking upon her ‘Long Farewell Tour’, performing hits like Pearl’s A Singer, Lilac Wine, Fool (If You think It’s Over) and Don’t Cry Out Loud, on October 4.

Vonda Shepard first shot to fame through her long-running musical accompaniment on the hit TV show Ally McBeal.

Her set-list includes favourites such as I Only Want To Be With You, Proud Mary, and You Belong To Me on October 18.

Suffolk girl and queen of the West End, Kerry Ellis will be singing songs from famous musicals and telling stories about how she came to star in some of musical theatre’s biggest roles on October 24.

Known for her rich voice and intelligent, heartfelt lyrics, Julia Fordham returns on November 22 for a solo show, having previously visited as part of the trio Woman to Woman, with Judie Tzuke and Beverley Craven.

Pioneers of the neo-burlesque/swing scene, The Puppini Sisters bring their immaculate close vocal harmonies on November 15.

Lloyd Cole (September 14) rose to fame with The Commotions, whose catchy hits Perfect Skin and Lost Weekend are part of the indie pop canon. Cole’s solo career is equally trademarked by personal lyrics and strong melodies.

Trevor Nelson’s Soul Nation on October 12 sees the BBC Radio and MTV presenter and DJ spin all the old school R&B tunes you know and love from the 80s, 90s and 00s.

Johnny Hates Jazz (October 17) achieved prominence in the late 1980s with a string of hits, notably Shattered Dreams and Turn Back The Clock (featuring Kim Wilde).

Haircut 100 singer Nick Heyward and his four-piece band will bring songs from his 40+ year career on October 19.

Singer with The Zombies, Colin Blunstone will perform his classic 1971 debut solo album, One Year, along with other selections from his career, on November 20.

The extensive list of tribute acts includes ELO Experience (September 5, 6 & 7); Go Now – The Music of The Moody Blues (September 17); The Wonder of Stevie (October 10); Rocket Man A Tribute to Elton John (October 23); Tina Live – The Tina Turner Experience (October 25); Walk Right Back The Everly Brothers Story (November 12); The Amy Winehouse Band (November 16); The Van Morrison Alumni Band (November 25); Gordon Hendricks as Elvis (November 29) and the ever-popular Abba Party Nights (December 19 & 20).

Co-founder of the folk-rock duo Billy Pilgrim and the country duo Sugarland with Jennifer Nettles, Kristian Bush (September 2) is a multi-platinum-selling, two-time GRAMMY Award winner.

Legendary 70s Tyneside folk-rock pioneers Lindisfarne return on October 6; Blazin’ Fiddles on November 11; Oysterband on November 14; Maddy Prior & The Carnival Band on December 9; Turin Brakes Acoustic on December 12 and The Albion Christmas Band on December 16.

Renowned gypsy jazz guitarist Lulo Reinhardt (the grandnephew of Django) returns to The Apex on September 4, with classical guitarist Yuliya Lonskaya, for a concert of Latin, flamenco, jazz and gypsy guitar music.

Frank & Ella, on September 29, sees The Len Phillips Swing Orchestra and stars of the West End’s Rat Pack: Live From Las Vegas paying tribute to Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

Liza Pulman - one third of the iconic Fascinating Aida - teams up with the quick-witted musical virtuoso Joe Stilgoe for ‘A Couple of Swells’ on October 20. Enjoy Joe’s dazzling piano playing and Liza’s exquisite vocals on gems from the likes of Irving Berlin, Billy Joel, Leonard Bernstein and many more.

The Manfreds, with original front man Paul Jones, will be performing many of their hits, along with a mix of jazz and blues tracks on November 1.

The Chris Ingham Quintet, featuring Joanna Eden, bring another feel-good Swinging Christmas on December 18.

The autumn season of classical concerts starts on September 15, with Suffolk Philharmonic Orchestra and their special guest pianist, Sir Stephen Hough.

Britten Sinfonia return on November 5, with Max Richter’s celebrated reimagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Recomposed.

Bury Bach Choir will perform beautiful sacred choral masterpieces on November 9; Suffolk Sinfonia bring their autumn concert on November 23; and BFO’s Christmas Celebration is on December 1.

There will also be heavenly singing from The Sixteen on November 27, with a Christmas concert that ranges from medieval carols to modern masterpieces.

If you fancy something a bit different, Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers bring an electrifying and uplifting performance of skill, stamina and heart-pounding rhythms on October 8.

Seckou Keita Homeland Band (October 28) sees “the Hendrix of the Kora” joined by one of Senegal’s best-known vocalists, Korka Dieng and Moustapha Gaye, lead guitarist for Youssou n’Dour.

One of Britain’s most influential and distinct bass players, Jah Wobble and his band, The Invaders Of The Heart (November 24) play hypnotic bass riffs over a mix of global music, reggae fusion and punk.

Penguin Café celebrate the original music of the Penguin Café Orchestra by performing a collection of classics on December 3.
