Get a golden ticket for Bury St Edmunds Operatic and Dramatic Society’s staging of Roald Dhal’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal
The world-famous Willy Wonka is opening the gates to his mysterious factory… but only to a lucky few. And you could be one of them if you book tickets to see Bury St Edmunds Operatic and Dramatic Society's next show.
Based on the famous novel by Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory comes to the Theatre Royal, May 13-17.
Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners will embark on a life-changing journey through Wonka’s world of pure imagination, including chocolate waterfalls, nutty squirrels and the great glass elevator, all to be revealed by Wonka’s army of curious Oompa-Loompas.
Two teams of children alternate performance nights – Team Oompa and Team Loompa – alongside a cast of adults. Steve Murray takes on the role of Willy Wonka, Nigel Witney plays Grandpa Joe and the part of Charlie will be shared by Austin Rolt and Sophie Goodchild.
The show features an original score composed by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) and a book by David Greig. The score also pays homage to the Leslie Bricusse/Anthony Newley score from the 1971 film with songs from the motion picture including Candy Man, I’ve Got a Golden Ticket, Oompa Loompa Song and Pure Imagination.
The show is directed by established BSEODS member Adam Thurkettle, while musical director Gaz Brown and choreographer Abigail Longworth are both new to the creative team.
Gaz is a vocal coach and musical director based in Ely and Abigail is in her final year of studying dance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire and is part of the UK's most celebrated hip hop theatre company – Boy Blue.
