Mid Suffolk Light Railway, at Brockford Station, in Wetheringsett, to host its Middy in the 1940s event this weekend

One of the big events in the annual calendar of a Mid Suffolk attraction takes place over the bank holiday weekend.

Mid Suffolk Light Railway (MSLR) is hosting its Middy in the 1940s two-day event today and tomorrow, promising this year will be bigger and better than ever.

Visitors can steam into history at Suffolk’s award-winning and only standard-gauge heritage railway, in Wetheringsett, as in addition to the usual railway attractions there will be a full programme of displays, military vehicles, live music, memorabilia, visiting ‘soldiers, sailors and airmen’.

Highlights of the weekend will include a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire flypast today, plus lots of parades, displays and demonstrations.

Tomorrow there will be Dad’s Army performances, while Sarah Mai will sing songs of the 1940s both days.

Visitors can also enjoy as many steam train rides as they like, hauled by resident locomotive 1910-built Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 saddle tank ‘Caledonia Works’ no.1219, along with the museum, café, restoration shed and souvenir shop, while the Middy’s real ale bar will be open.

This season, Mendlesham USAAF 34th Bomb Group Museum is on site with a collection of historic World War Two memorabilia and artefacts.
