Where you can go to watch bonfire night fireworks near Newmarket
Fireworks are at the ready for a weekend of bonfire night celebrations.
Guy Fawkes Night has been an annual event for hundreds of years after a failed attempt to blow up the House of Lords in 1605.
From March that year a rented cellar under the Lords was loaded it with 36 barrels of gunpowder and Fawkes went to the continent to try win foreign support for his plans to overthrow King James to insert a Catholic-friendly monarch after decades persecution.
But he was spotted by English spies.
On November 5 Robert Cecil, Earl of Sailsbury and James' first minister, ordered a full search of Westminster where they arrested Fawkes and foiled the Gunpowder Plot.
Guy Fawkes and his gang were then tortured and killed for treason.
And as a result of the plan the government passed new laws banning Catholics from practising law, serving as officers in the Army or Navy, or voting in local or Parliamentary elections.
It was not until 1829 the laws were lifted as part of the Catholic Relief Act.
In the 19th century the tradition was in decline but started to grow again in the early 20th century as firework manufactures used the night as a way to sell more pyrotechnics.
Now rugby clubs, councils and organisations host events for people to attend.
If you want to head out and celebrate the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot events will be held across the area to mark the day.
