Motion before East Suffolk Council states changing nappies could help save climate change
A bid asking for a new reusable nappies voucher to reduce CO2 emissions is due to be presented to councillors.
It follows a 2023 Government report which found the environmental impact of reusable nappies to be over 90 per cent lower than the disposable single-use kind, even after taking into consideration washing and drying.
The motion states: “If every child in the UK in nappies used reusables rather than disposables, it would save the equivalent of 700 million car miles of CO2 — that’s nearly 3,000 journeys to the moon in a car.”
It goes on to add even after washing and drying, choosing reusable nappies would still be the best choice for the environment.
However, with the price of reusable nappies requiring extra upfront cash, making this choice could become difficult.
To address this, the motion is asking the council to offer a money-off voucher or a starter pack to those expecting children as well as parents or foster carers with babies under 18 months, or under the age of five with a disability.
The notion is due to be presented during East Suffolk’s full council meeting next Wednesday, November 27.
