A cow is stuck up to its shoulders in a river.

Its all-terrain vehicle – the Unimog – was mobilised on the opposite bank of the river to the cow.

After liaising with a water flood rescue technician, crews themselves entered the water to try and guide the animal to safety.

By 11.20pm, having worked alongside the farmer on several rescue techniques – including the use of an inflatable hose and inflatable dingy – the crews were not able free the cow safely in the dark.

Overnight, it was left in the care of the farmer.

An on-call team from Orford were back at the scene by 9.30am, and were joined by a crew from Princes Street by 11.30am.

They are waiting for the arrival of a vet to assist with another rescue attempt.
