Otter rescued from Deben Mill near Woodbridge in Suffolk is being cared for by Wildlives Wildlife Rescue in Essex

An adorable young otter has been taken to a rescue centre after it was found abandoned in a Suffolk field.

The three-week-old kit, which is only just able to open its eyes, was discovered by a member of the public near Deben Mill, near Woodbridge.

Initially, they left it in the hope that it would be reunited with its mother.

But they eventually called the RSPCA 48 hours later, who took it to Wildlives Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Thorrington, Essex.

Rosie Catford, who set up the centre, said: "It was brought to us on September 19, by a member of the public.

"We've have had otters in before but not this tiny. They usually do not come out of the holt until much older.

"This one, its eyes are literally just opening."

After being taken in by the centre, the otter was kept warm and given plenty of fluids.

The kit is already steadily improving, and is taking on its bottle more than when it first arrived.

Having been found in the middle of nowhere and away from water, Rosie believes it is likely to have been left by its mother during the recent wet weather.

She added: "It is a mystery for something that young to be out within an area of no water.

"I think what happened was its mother was taking her babies to dryer land during the wet weather and it somehow got left behind.

"Their holt probably flooded out because of all the rain."

The process of bringing the otter back to full health has now begun, but it could take up to a year before it is back out in the wild.

An artificial holt, which is where otters nest, will have to be made for the creature before it is released back into Suffolk rivers.
