Winning first place on the list is Northumberland market town Hexham. The London borough of Richmond upon Thames, the spa town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire and Hove in East Sussex also ranked high.

The list was devised following a survey of 21,000 people who responded to questions based on ten measures including local activities and amenities, nature and green spaces and community spirit.

Responses for each of the ten measures were then averaged to provide both a category score and an overall score.
