Bury St Edmunds coffee roaster - Butterworth and Son - has struck an exclusive deal to supply a range of rare coffees to London's Selfridges
A Bury St Edmunds coffee roaster is celebrating after being invited to supply one of the world’s best known high-end department stores.
Butterworth and Son, based in Boldero Road, is now supplying Selfridges with a range of exclusive coffees.
The deal came about after the company linked up with Bury-based consultancy Luxury Fine Living, which helped Butterworth present two rare coffees to Selfridges buyers, along with a third selection pack of its top blends.
All three are only available at Selfridges in Oxford Street, London, and through the department store’s global website.
“We are very excited to supply probably the best department store in the world,” said Butterworth’s founder, Rob Butterworth.
“We are supplying three products. The first is an exotic, rare and exceptional coffee, a pink bourbon varietal from the Huila region, Colombia, which has been processed in a rum oak barrel.
“The second is a special preparation from Mexico which is distinctly unique, from one of the finest producers, at the top of his game.
“For the third, we wanted to do something different and compiled an exclusive selection taster pack, featuring coffees from our top range.”
Rob founded Butterworth and Sons Coffee Roasters and Tea Smiths 25 years ago.
The company focuses on coffees from smallholdings and indigenous communities where the coffee grown helps preserve the environment and the traditional ways of life.
The Butterworth family history with tea can be traced back to the 19th century when Harry Butterworth worked as tea dealer in the Manchester, from where the Butterworth name originates. Rob’s father, Robert, ran a number of Butterworth shops in Bury St Edmunds.
“We predominantly supply independent cafés and establishments throughout East Anglia,” said Rob.
“Supplying super-rare coffees from indigenous communities to clients is the future and we are exploring further opportunities in Peru, Guatemala and Mexico.”
Danielle Roe, founder of Luxury Fine Living, a distributor and brand consultancy, said: “I’ve known Rob for more than 30 years and always promised to help him with his coffee. The whole process of it being stocked by Selfridges took around five months.
“It’s an amazing store and they loved the products. I’m delighted to have helped.”
