Greater Anglia launches virtual tour of Bury St Edmunds railway station

Greater Anglia has launched a virtual tour of one of its busiest Suffolk stations.

The operator said the new service for Bury St Edmunds railway station will help people to travel with confidence.

The tour, which features detailed 360-degree photography, was designed to support journey planning and reduce anxiety for travellers about how they will get around the station.

According to figures for the Office of Rail and Road, Bury St Edmunds is Suffolk’s third most used station.

Rebecca Richardson, Greater Anglia’s accessibility and inclusion manager, said: “The idea was to create a tool for customers to assist them with their journey planning and reduce the anxiety about whether the station would create any accessibility barriers, so that they can travel with confidence.

“We are committed to making rail more accessible and providing quality information to enable more informed journey planning.”

Using the virtual tour, people can find out how to get to all public areas, including the toilets, ticket machines, platforms, taxi rank, and bus stops.

Greater Anglia hopes it will help disabled passengers to navigate their way around the station.

It also features aerial photography and an interactive map, which shows the location of all it facilities in relation to each other.

These can also be navigated through a drop-down menu and ‘autopilot’ tool, which gives users the option of selecting their location and being automatically guided to it.

The technology was provided by The Virtual Tour Experts and has a spoken scene guide with closed captions.
