Martlesham, near Kesgrave, pub The Red Lion, run by Greene King, reopens after six-figure refurb

A popular 15th century pub near Kesgrave has reopened with a ‘new look and feel’ after a six-figure refurbishment.

The Red Lion, in Martlesham, closed on February 19 for work to be carried out.

The grade-II listed pub, owned by Greene King and run as part of the Chef & Brewer collection, re-welcomed customers for the first time in five weeks today.

Inside, its decor and furniture have seen a complete overhaul which the team hoped would create a warm and inviting feel, with the outside seeing a ‘top to bottom’ makeover, the owners said.

Ryan Miller, the general manager of The Red Lion, said new paintwork and furnishing will help breathe new life into the pub – although he urged regulars not to worry as its signature figurehead would not be going anywhere.

He said: “We’re excited to open our doors to the people of Martlesham.

“These refurbishment have given a new lease of life to the pub, which we’re excited to share with everyone.”

Guests can also enjoy a new ‘state-of-the-art’ outdoor terrace, which has seen its patio space expanded. It is also covered and heated.

The refurb led to the creation of 10 new jobs, Greene King confirmed.

Ryan added: “With the pub having so many traditional features and being such an important part of the local community, we wanted to make sure we combined these with a new look and feel to give our guests the best of both worlds when they come to visit and we have no doubt they’ll love their experience.”
