Farrah Clay, of Stowmarket, conquers Mount Snowdon after serious ankle injury
A woman has defied the odds after climbing one of the highest mountains in the UK following a serious ankle injury.
Farrah Clay, 33, of Stowmarket, scaled Mount Snowdown to raise funds for the East of England Ambulance Service Charity after being told by doctors that she would never climb again following her injury.
In September 2023, she was bouldering - a form of climbing without a rope - when she fell and severely dislocated her right ankle, requiring emergency surgery to insert pins and screws to her ankle.
Farrah said: “My consultant told me that I wouldn’t climb again and doing a mountain would be ‘very uncomfortable’ - but anyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t give up without a fight.”
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Farrah reached the Mount Snowdon summit in nine and a half hours with the support of her partner Jamie, family and friends.
“I’m extremely proud that I completed,” she said. “It was one of the most incredible experiences and I am so grateful to everyone who got me there.
“My ankle was well behaved and my team were phenomenal - at the top we popped some Prosecco.
“Coming down was always going to be more challenging because of the ankle stability.
“But I took my time and I made it to the bottom even with a couple of knocks that caused me to have to sit down for a few moments.”
Farrah has raised more than £500 for the East of England Ambulance Service Charity and her JustGiving page is still open for donations, which can be viewed here.
She chose to fund-raise for the emergency service to show her appreciation to the ambulance crews who treated her after her injury.
Kate Lott, head of charity at the East of England Ambulance Service, added: “We are truly inspired by Farrah’s story and so grateful that she has completed this incredible challenge in aid of the East of England Ambulance Service Charity.
“We are always humbled when patients fund-raise on behalf of our amazing staff and volunteers.
“Farrah’s strength and determination have been astounding.”
